The brains behind The Black Hair Book website

Tell us about The Black Hair Book?

Jo: It is a website for people to find great local hairstylists for afro and curly textured hair. It provides detailed information about the salon or stylist so people can make an informed decision.

What led to its launch?

Jo: I had a negative experience at a salon one day in 2016 and realised that a number of black women had probably been through the same thing. This led me to create a blog to highlight good salons, which as evolved into the website you see today.

Paige: There is a real struggle to find mainstream stylists who are educated in black hair and there are so many beauty apps that do not apply to the needs of black women. Even in 2018, we are one of the most under-represented ethnicities in the media, irrespective of spending over triple the amount on beauty and cosmetics. I thought it was time for that to change.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Paige: I manage our social media and work with Jo on planning events that we aim to grow further in the future. We have a big project coming up so a large portion of our day is also spent looking at market research and drowning in creative areas.
