Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam CJ Walker

When Octavia Spencer takes a staring turn, you know you’re in for a treat. This is a four-part story of Madam CJ Walker. Not familiar with the name? She was the first self-made female millionaire in America who, having been born just two years after the emancipation of slavery, began life as a washer woman and ended up running her own hair business empire. In our current turbulent times, it’s just the tonic we need: a heart-warming story with an inspiring woman to get behind.

Love is Blind

Love is Blind

If you thought we had reached peak dating shows with Married at First Sight and the like, wait till you clap eyes on Love is Blind. The concept allows two people to get to know each other through a series of ‘blind dates’, ending in a marriage ceremony if each person agrees.

As the title of the show professes, an enduring relationship isn’t based on looks. But is it right? The show makes for compulsive viewing, however weirded out you get. And in a time of isolation, it might just prove that love, or even marriage, can find you without any physical contact to be had.

Oh yes, we know there are plenty of Star Wars’ fans among our hair-loving crowd here. So you’ll be pleased to know that The Mandalorian has hit at just the right point in your life when there’s literally nowhere to go and no one to see. This is a biggie drop: the first release from Disney’s new streaming platform, which is set five years after Return of the Jedi. Among the writers is Nigerian-American director and producer Rick Famuyiwa, while there’s also an incredible eclectic cast of characters. We challenge you not to love it.
