Welcome to the salon of the future
From Amazon Prime to Amazon pampering – the online giant has just opened a hair salon in London with every gadget going.
So you know Amazon, right? Those guys in their electric vans who will deliver next day literally anything you need – including fresh food and physical shops where you can select groceries yourself? If you needed another reason to let Amazon into your life, then you might be interested in their latest project: a hair salon.
Technology and tresses
Yes, Amazon has surprised everyone by launching a huge, hi-tech hair destination, just around the corner from their offices. Set in Spitalfields, east London, the salon is kitted out with all the mod-cons imaginable – including ones you never knew existed. For example, it uses ‘point and learn’ technology that allows you to point at a product on a shelf, which will then send information and videos about it to your screen. There are Fire tablets at each station and it will show off an augmented reality mirror for hair consultations, so you can see if you’re more fun as a blonde or better off a brunette.
Want a hair product? No problem, just scan the barcode and your chosen shampoo and styling goodies will be delivered to your doorstep. Fancy reading a mag or watching something? The tablet will keep you entertained while your hair is being tended to.
“We have designed this salon for customers to come and experience some of the best technology, hair care products and stylists in the industry,” said John Boumphrey, UK Country Manager, Amazon. “We want this unique venue to bring us one step closer to customers, and it will be a place where we can collaborate with the industry and test new technologies.”
The people behind the screens
While there’s no shortage of tech on offer, the haircare basics haven’t been ignored. Amazon Salon is stocked and staffed by Neville Hair & Beauty. Owner Elena Lavagni explains why the project is so ground-breaking. “The salon combines classic hairdressing services with technology to deliver a completely unique experience for clients.”
She emphasises that hair expertise at the heart of the salon’s ethos. “Our creative team of stylists, whose flair for hair is as intrinsic as their love for technology, will put the client at the heart of everything they do. I feel proud to use our 40 years’ experience in the industry to help bring this salon to life.”
A threat to traditional hairdressing?
What is worrying many salon owners in the UK is that this could be the start of Amazon’s dominance of their embattled sector. No, according to the company, who claim this is an “experiential venue” and that there no plans for further salons.
