Pat McGrath creates 61 looks in one NYFW show
Legendary make-up artist Pat McGrath shows her true versatility by creating 61 different make-up looks for Marc Jacobs’ SS20 show
Pat McGrath made two arguments at the Marc Jacobs SS20 at New York Fashion Week: one for maximalism and one for individualism. Both of these concepts were overtly evident in each of her 61 make-up looks that hit the runway that night.
The make-up artist, along with Jacobs and hairstylist Guido Palau, developed characters for each outfit in what was to be the costume party of the year. In an array of colour, pattern and texture, the models flooded the runway at the Park Avenue Armory sporting unique head to toe looks - a nod to ‘the joy in dressing up’, as Jacobs stated in his show notes.
"There's an amazing cast of characters in the show — some extravagant, some natural," McGrath told Paper. "Everybody now loves to play with makeup. Some people are truly eccentric, and some people love the art of true natural makeup. Once you see the clothes, you'll see real characters that come to life."
Using Marc Jacobs Beauty, McGrath’s make-up looks ranged from a glitter encrusted red lip, to insanely long, cartoon-like lashes, to a butterfly wing design that wouldn’t have looked out of place at a carnival face-painting stand. It was fun - one might even say childlike and innocent, but delivered in a completely deliberate manner that did not take away from McGrath’s make-up mastery.
