How to save your curls without a stylist
Curl care is as essential now as ever - but with salons closed due to COVID-19, here's how to keep your curls in top shape at home
The SS20 runways were adorned with big, bouncy, bountiful curls, from tightly-coiled perms to wavy locks. For those already blessed with curls, kinks and coils, Lizzie Carter, Founder and director of Only Curls, shares her top tips for keeping curly hair in great shape, and recreating these catwalk ready styles naturally this spring with dedicated products.
The curl cleanser
Lizzie says, ‘The first step to creating the textured and defined curl styles loved by fashionistas is to prep the hair by ensuring curls are clean and frizz-free pre-styling. Using a shampoo which is created for curly hair will ensure hair is smooth, tangle-free and easier to style.’
For curly girls, Lizzie created the Only Curls All Curl Cleanser gentle foaming, sulfate-free shampoo. It uses Only Curls' signature blend of Avocado and Kukui Oils to naturally moisturise hair and scalp. Helping to detangle, add shine and reduce frizz. The results: clean, hydrated, happy curls.
‘The next step is good conditioner to give life to lacklustre locks! Apply a good palm full of conditioner such as the Only Curls All Curl Conditioner and rake through using your fingers, detangling as you go.’
'For tangle-free curls, grab a wide tooth comb such as the Only Curls Pink Speckle Comb and gently comb the conditioner through your curls. Detangling hair from the bottom going upwards allows you to gently detangle each knot, without damaging or breaking the hair. Once detangled tip your hair forwards and scrunch with your hands. This forces the water and conditioner into the hair giving maximum hydration. Rinse thoroughly.’
Lizzie's top tip: ‘Regular trims will keep split ends at bay and will keep curls looking bouncy and defined.’
The hydrating styler
Lizzie says it’s all in the prep: ‘Curly hair loves hydration and cocktailing products help curls stay smooth and frizz-free. Adding in a hydrating curl crème, such as Only Curls Hydrating Curl Crème, when wet will keep your style looking smooth from day to night.’
The hair cuticles are smoothest when wet, so applying it now will lock-in the moisture. Rake the crème through with your fingers, then with your palms together and hair in between, smooth down each section, scrunching as you go. Following with a defining, styling product will give hold without crunch.’
Lizzie's top tip: ‘Most curly girls find that curls are in need of hydration, incorporating a two-step conditioner regime and adding in a weekly deep conditioner will make curls look and feel hydrated.’
The curl enhancer
To get voluminous curls, Lizzie Carter says, 'Use a curl-enhancing styling product. I created the Only Curls Enhancing Curl Gel to help create definition and hold without stickiness. Simply take some product into your hands and lightly scrunch this into your curls section-by-section. Then, dry your curls using a diffuser on a low heat, using the diffuser to hold the curls. A diffuser will keep curls in shape and won’t cause as much heat damage as blow-drying. Dry until your hair is around 90% dry, then leave to air dry.'
This oil-infused gel holds curls in shape while adding shine and moisture. The special blend of Avocado Oil, Kukui Oil and Aloe, naturally hydrates curls, minimises frizz and maximises curl impact.
Lizzie comments, ‘Adding an accessory is the perfect way to keep curls in place. Fix curls up in a stylish-up do or just place at the nape, swishing curls over one side for an instant sophisticated style. I keep mine with me for a quick day-to-night style.’
Lizzie's top tip: ‘If curls need refreshing, simply spritz with water, scrunch using styling product and twist the curls around your fingers to help define second-day curls.’
