A facial with Bianca Estelle can be likened to being styled by American fashion designer Virgil Abloh. Both are at the top of their game and know their own brands inside out. OK, so I haven’t been styled by Abloh yet (you can’t blame a woman for dreaming big), but I have experienced the expertise of Harley Street-trained skin specialist Bianca. With over 17 years’ experience in the medical aesthetic industry and her own award-winning range bea Skin Care, what stands out is her friendly honesty: “Only wear mineral make-up,” she says with a smile. “Breakouts after a treatment are a good sign,” and “it’s better to have healthy skin cells than a summer glow.”

Having suffered from acne and hyperpigmentation herself, Bianca understands the journey her clients go through, so I felt like I was in safe hands when she prescribed a glycolic acid peel, medical microdermabrasion and LED light therapy to tackle my congestion and uneven complexion.

What Bianca says about glycolic acid peel...

One of the best ways to achieve smoother, radiant kin is by having a chemical skin peel. The benefits of this treatment are immense, improving the look and feel of skin affected by acne scars, pigmentation, scarring and skin that has a rough surface.

What Jemima says about glycolic acid peel...

I still baulk at the idea of putting acid on your face but this one is made from a derivative of sugar cane. In our initial consultation, Bianca recommended that I used her seven step skin care routine to prepare my skin for the peel – life got busy so I didn't do it. Bianca worked around that by leaving the peel on for less than five mins, but if your skin is well prepped it can be left on for up to 10 mins.

What Bianca says about microdermabrasion

The microdermabrasion procedure takes approximately 30 minutes, depending upon the skin condition, the area to be treated and the desired outcome. Many will notice improvements in the texture and appearance of their skin immediately after the first treatment. The long term benefits of multiple procedures can be remarkable.

What Jemima says about microdermabrasion

I've had this treatment before and it's one of favourite facials. Why? There's no recovery time, instantly your skin looks brighter, smoother and healthier and the scratchy feeling of the pen being rubbed over the face, for me, is strangely relaxing. It's is also very good and lifting dead cells which is one of the primary reasons for patchy skin. The area around my mouth and chin is a little darker so it was good that Bianca paid close attention to those spots.

What Bianca says about LED light therapy

This is a non-thermal light panel machine which delivers photo energy into the skin. Each colour of light – blue, green, purple, red and yellow – reaches a different depth of tissue penetration and targets different skin problems. LED light therapy can be used to treat a wide range of skin conditions, including acne, rosacea, melasma, sun damage and fine lines.

What Jemima says about LED light therapy

Well this was an interesting experience. When the goggles were place over my eyes I didn't know what I was for, so it was quite a surprise to see from the picture the gadget that surrounded my face. Not only do you not see a thing, you don't feel a thing. The light doesn't feel hot and thank goodness you don't feel enclosed like an MRI scan. It's a good opportunity to get a 30 minute snooze.

Quick summary

The hour-long facial is an all-round comfortable experience. The tingling sensation from the peel is easy to bear while the scratching from the microdermabrasion – ‘don’t worry, that’s just the dead skin cells lifting,’ reassures Bianca – is strangely relaxing. The final step involves being placed under what can only be described as a high-tech red lit oven for 20 minutes before the application of a soft face mask and final cleanse and tone with bea products.

If make-up is your comfort blanket, be warned that you will have to spend the rest of the day foundation-free. But on the plus side there is no down time after the treatment and you won’t leave the clinic with a red-raw face. For the best results, Bianca recommends we receive a course of six facials.
