Afro hairdressing has crowned a new king
After seven year's of entering the HJ's British Hairdressing Awards, Rick Roberts finally takes the trophy for afro hair home
Rick Roberts from Rick Roberts Hair in Beverley (East Yorkshire) is the UK’s newest Afro hair styling star. He won the coveted title of Afro Hairdresser of the Year last night (25th November) at HJ’s renowned British Hairdressing Awards 2019, sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional.
Rick beat five other category finalists – all from London - in the national awards, dubbed the ‘Oscars’ of the hair world, to claim the sought-after accolade of Afro Hairdresser of the Year – a title that recognises the country’s ultimate Afro hair stylist. Rick’s success is testament to his eye for producing wearable and beautiful hair married with captivating creative flair.
Going through vigorous judging before being rewarded for his skill, Rick was required to submit eight images of original hair work to demonstrate not only his technical skill, but also creative vision and comprehension of current trends. The photographic collection was judged twice by a panel of hairdressing legends, leading national beauty press, and Hall of Fame members (those who have won the same British Hairdressing Awards category on three occasions).
Rick received the coveted Afro styling recognition at the Grosvenor House, a J W Marriott Hotel in London in front of hairdressing peers, influencers and press. Also receiving an accolade for her afro expertise was Michelle Thompson from Wolverhampton, who was inducted into the British Hairdressing Awards Hall of Fame, after winning the Afro Hairdresser of the Year title a trio of times in 2018, 2015 and 2009.
