A guide to a greener Christmas
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) shows us five ways to celebrate Christmas without endangering the environment.
If you can’t wait to treat your loved ones this Christmas but want to choose presents that are kind to nature, the RSPB gift guide is a great place to start your search.
More and more people are waking up to the impact our consumer-driven lifestyles is having upon precious natural resources and our amazing wildlife. But Christmas shopping needn’t come with a dose of eco-anxiety – these nature friendly gift ideas will help you tread lightly and directly help the wildlife you love.
Glitter free and FSC
Glitter is a microplastic that can end up in oceans and ingested by fish. It also means the product can’t be recycled. RSPB Christmas cards are not only gorgeously designed but are also printed on wildlife friendly, fully recyclable FSC cardboard.
Cut down on plastic
One easy change you can make today is to start using a reusable metal bottle rather than a single-use plastic container. These triple-layered bottles will keep your drinks warm or cold for longer and come in three exclusive motifs – a barn owl, puffin and blue tit. The RSPB also offer the world’s first reusable cup made from recycled coffee cups - it can be recycled once again at the end of its life cycle and is completely leak proof and insulated.
All our nest boxes are made from FSC certified wood, which ensures that they are sourced from a well-managed forest from the protection of indigenous people’s rights to tree felling methods. This means you can feel reassured you aren’t going to harm nature in your efforts to provide shelter for local garden birds. Nest boxes aren’t just for the breeding season - birds pack inside them for warmth during the winter months. The record number of birds in one box is 63 wrens!
Go for organic
Global Organic Textile Standard cotton cuts out toxic chemical pesticides, saves water and helps care for the communities who grow it. Producers limit their water use to protect wildlife habitats, treat water and meet social criteria such as safe working conditions. The RSPB organic scarves look lovely and feel cosy too! £15 each or two for £20.
No palm oil
The Victorian Flora toiletries celebrate the RSPB’s founders- a group of intrepid Victorian women who campaigned to stop exotic birds being killed for fashion - with our heritage blend of orange blossom, rose geranium, cedarwood and petitgrain. The RSPB’s range is guaranteed free of parabens, phosphates and palm oil. Plus it’s vegan and made in the UK. Ethical pampering for your loved ones (or yourself).
